The Niche Where Zero AoE Becomes Useful
Despite its drawbacks, zero AoE can shine in single-target, boss-focused scenarios. Boss encounters do not require wide coverage; they reward precision, consistency, and high per-hit damage. When an AoE skill is forced into a single point, all of its damage is concentrated exactly where the player aims.
This can be particularly effective for:
Slam attacks where damage is front-loaded into one impact.
Impact-centered spells that do not rely on area coverage to function.
Trigger-based setups, where AoE size is irrelevant as long as the hit occurs.
In these cases, zero AoE removes wasted damage rather than useful damage. Everything is applied directly to the boss hitbox.
Build Archetypes That Can Leverage Zero AoE
The most natural home for this mechanic is a boss-killer build. A slow, heavy-hitting character-such as a Juggernaut- or Warbringer-style archetype-can stand close to enemies and deliver devastating hits without caring about area coverage. Similarly, a spellcaster using an AoE-tagged spell purely as a delivery system for massive hit damage can benefit from the forced precision.
These builds typically sacrifice mapping efficiency entirely, relying on party play, weapon swapping, or secondary skills to handle trash mobs. In return, they gain exceptional single-target performance.
Conclusion: Gimmick, but Not Pointless
Zero Area of Effect in Path of Exile 2 is not a universally good mechanic, nor is it secretly overpowered. It is a highly specialized tool that only works when the build's goals align with its severe limitations. For general play, it feels useless-and in many cases, it truly is. For dedicated bossing, experimental theorycrafting, or extreme single-target optimization, however, Cornathaum's Light Radius interaction offers a strange but legitimate path forward.
In true Path of Exile fashion, what cheap POE2 Currency appears to be a mistake or a meme can become a functional build-provided the player is willing to build entirely around it.
